Discipleship Intern

Summary

The discipleship intern is a part-time staff member whose primary responsibilities are supporting the existing ministry groups of the church, and helping all members (and prospective members) grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. They will work with the pastor to support and strengthen those groups, and to create new opportunities for discipleship at Church of the Cross. They will be mentored by the pastor and other church leaders, growing in faith alongside the church community.

Applicants

This position is intended for an undergraduate (or graduate) student with an interest in vocational ministry, discipleship, and/or Christian education. Previous experience serving in a church or other ministry setting (paid or as a volunteer) is preferred but not required. While they do not have to be a United Methodist, they must be willing to learn about The United Methodist Church and Wesleyan theology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the pastor to support and strengthen existing ministry groups

  • Coordinate with church staff, volunteers, and other members to plan and provide new discipleship opportunities (e.g. small groups, prayer groups, mission opportunities)

  • Support ongoing and new outreach efforts that connect people—especially prospective and new members—to the life and ministries of the church

  • Work with the pastor to support and participate in our Sunday worship experience

  • Participate in mentoring and supervisory sessions with the pastor and other church leaders

Personal Qualifications

  • Exemplify the love, grace, and love of God in all things, and have a desire to grow in faith alongside others

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, and a high level of integrity

  • Enthusiasm for church life and ministry, and working with people of all backgrounds

Hours and Salary

Up to 10 hours per week with flexibility for student responsibilities (e.g. exams, games) at $16.00 per hour. Ability to work during the summer is preferred (but not required).
