MISSIONS FACT:

Apportionment # 1: World Service Fund
The World Service Fund is the heart of the United Methodist denomination wide presence, underwriting Christian mission and ministry around the world.

The fund strengthens our evangelism effort, stimulates church growth, expands Bible studies and enriches spiritual commitment. By giving to World Service and conference benevolences, we help God's children everywhere, shape the lives of tomorrow's leaders and proclaim our Christian faith.

Apportionment # 2: Ministerial Education Fund
Men and women choose the ministry because God calls them. The Ministerial Education Fund is our way of helping them answer that divine call.

25 percent of the money collected in Mission and Ministry stay in the Kansas West Conference. These funds are used for seminary student scholarships, seminary visits to establish and maintaining relationships with seminary students, continuing education for clergy and other programs developed by the Board of Ordained Ministry.

Apportionment # 3: Africa University Fund
This fund supports the only United Methodist, degree-granting university on the continent of Africa and the first private university in Zimbabwe. Nestled between the lowlands of Mozambique and the highlands of Zimbabwe is Africa University-a young, sturdy and vibrant educational facility promoting academic excellence and physical and spiritual development for men and women from all over the continent of Africa.

Africa University students come from Angola, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. In this community, more than 750 students are united in one common purpose: to attain a quality university education.

In addition to providing a challenging curriculum, Africa University stimulates a continuing dialogue and discourse on the astonishing array of African Cultures, beliefs and traditions.

Through the Africa University Fund, we continue the development of the first private university for men and women throughout Africa, and offer post-secondary education for student through schools of agriculture and natural resources, management and administration, education, humanities, and social sciences and theology.

Apportionment # 4: Black College Fund
Nurtured by the Black College Fund, the 11 historically African-American United Methodist-related institutions play a unique role in U.S. higher education. They attract students from diverse social, economic and educational backgrounds-students who receive inestimable affirmation and support in vibrant, academically challenging spiritual environments. Here, and perhaps only here, a quality education is available to many who have experienced racial, economic or academic barriers at other institutions. Graduates of the Black colleges include significant numbers of ministers and bishops, teachers, doctors, judges, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and journalists. Many are leaders of the African-American community and, notably, leaders of a rapidly changing United States.

Apportionment # 5: Institutions
Christians helping others in need is at the heart of Jesus' teachings. Through your giving to Missions and Ministries, the United Methodist Church helps support health ministries for children, adults and seniors in Kansas.

The Institutions Fund provides support to these six affiliated institutions: United Methodist Youthville, Kansas Wesleyan University, Southwestern College, Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Wesley Towers Retirement Community, and the Kansas Area campus ministry program.

Apportionment # 6: Ministerial Services and Support Fund
Assures pastoral leadership for congregations all across the Kansas West Conference who are unable to provide an acceptable minimum salary. Provides salaries and office support for the bishop and district superintendents and assists clergy as they change appointments and residences.

Supports the Board of Ordained Ministry, which oversees the process through which new pastors are ordained.

Funds the conference's General Church apportionment for the General Episcopal Fund. (Bishops oversee and promote temporal and spiritual interests of the church. The Episcopal Fund provides the economic support for the performance of those diverse and important tasks.)

Apportionment # 7: Administrative Services and Support Fund
This fund finances general church activities administrative in nature, rather than programmatic, missional or ecumenical.

The Administrative Services and Support Fund:
* Funds the legislative work of the General Conference, Jurisdictional Conference and the Annual Conference.
* Provides resources for local church and church cluster ministries.
* Supports the Kansas Area Resource Center.
* Trains new leaders within the church.
Supports the conference's participation in Igniting Ministry, Kansas West Connection, conference web site, email lists and use of technology.
